AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency)

The percentage of a heating system's fuel energy that becomes useful heat over a typical year.

An AFUE of 86% means 86 cents of every fuel dollar warms your home; the other 14 cents leaves as flue loss. Older equipment ran at 60–75%. Modern condensing equipment can exceed 95%.
