How tanked water heaters work

A dip tube feeds cold water into the bottom of an insulated tank. The heating element (gas burner or electric coil) warms the water until it hits the thermostat setpoint — typically 120°F. As you draw hot water from a faucet, fresh cold water enters the bottom and pushes the warmer water up and out through the heat-out pipe at the top.

How tankless water heaters work

Tankless systems don't store hot water. When you open a hot tap, cold water flows through a heat exchanger that heats it on demand. The result: a virtually endless supply of hot water and lower standby losses, since you're not paying to keep a tank hot 24/7.
