Monthly HVAC Maintenance Guide – October

Your heating and cooling systems require regular maintenance to keep them running properly. Homeowners should stay on top of monthly maintenance tasks to improve their systems' performance and maximize its efficiency. Here are some tips of what you should inspect, clean, schedule, and set for the month of October:

1. Air Filters

As summer turns into autumn, the transition time is the perfect moment to change your air filters. If you have disposable filters, remove the old ones and insert a clean replacement. If you have filters that are reusable, wash them according to the manufacturer’s directions and allow them to dry entirely before reinserting them into the filter compartment. Unwanted dirt and dust can clog up your system, causing performance issues. You may find it necessary to replace air filters sooner than the usual 3-month mark during times of high use, in which case it’s important to keep a few backup filters handy just in case. 2. Supply/Return Vents and Radiators/Baseboards

Make sure your vents are never blocked. Blocked vents restrict airflow through your HVAC systems, which will create performance issues. Move all carpets and rugs, furniture, and other items away from vents. The same goes for radiators and baseboards. Do not place couches, beds, or other furniture directly up against them.

3. Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors monthly throughout heating season. Replace batteries now, and test them each month, using the unit’s ‘TEST’ button. Vacuum away any dust which has accumulated on the detectors.

4. Heating Annual Tune-Up

Here in Connecticut, October means temperatures dipping low enough to warrant the use of our heating systems. To properly maintain the equipment, it should be serviced and cleaned at least once a year. Most service contracts cover the cost of a tune-up to help your system run efficiently through the heating season. Preventative maintenance of your equipment reduces the likelihood of requiring an emergency service call at 2:00 o’clock in the morning on the coldest night of the year.

5. Heating Equipment Safety

Keep the area surrounding your heating equipment clear. Never store items directly by the furnace or boiler, especially flammable or combustible material such as rags, wood, gasoline, paint, solvent, and cleaners.
