When the temperatures rise, the simple answer would be to blast the air conditioner and create a nice wintry environment. However, by the end of the month, you’ll notice in your bill statements that it uses a ton of energy. Here are five simple alternative ways to cool your home without air conditioning. Here’s to holding on for a few more weeks before we reach the fall!

1. Open a few windows at night.

When the sun goes down it will be substantially cooler, so pop the windows open and enjoy a nice breeze. You’ll be amazed at how quickly the heat throughout your house will be replaced with cool, refreshing air. Also, a fan can help circulate the cool air throughout your home.

2. Close the blinds or curtains during the day.

This is one of the most effective alternative ways to cool your home. In fact, it can lower the mid-day temperature of your home by 10–15 degrees! Windows allow sunlight and heat to enter your home with no way to escape. So the best way to combat this is by not letting the sunlight in during the day. If you’re not a fan of having a darker home, try just closing the blinds or curtains on the west and south-facing windows.

3. Avoid using the oven and other kitchen appliances.

Making dinner in the oven or on a stovetop is going to add heat to your home. Instead of cooking inside when it’s already hot, enjoy some fresh air and use an outdoor grill for cooking. As an added bonus, grilling makes food taste better!

4. Utilize the fan on your furnace or ceiling fans.

Most thermostats allow you to manually turn on the fan that blows hot air throughout your home in the winter. For homes that do not have a forced-air system, but have ceiling fans, those will work too. Fans help evenly distribute the cooler air from the basement or main level to other parts of your home.

5. Keep interior doors open.

Allowing air to flow through your house freely will keep your home cooler. A summer breeze and even gusts of wind can blow into your house and circulate throughout your home, replacing the hot air.
